Eharmony Password Dumpster

Eharmony Password Dumpster

During our tests, we reset the password for an eHarmony account several times. Each time, we found that the passwords were reset to a five-character password using only letters and digits. While the password appears to be using uppercase and lowercase letters, we know that the hashes use only uppercase. Yes, eHarmony is a waste of money, at least from my experiences. Despite the fact that I indicated a match distance to be near my home, 95% of my matches were way too far away to even consider pursuing. Matching on eHarmony is only as good as the initial questions you answer.

What Is A Password Dumpster

This happened a couple months ago. My co-workers still didn't understand that it was hard for me in the dating world (Asian male here). They said to try online dating because it worked for them. I already knew that online dating is hard from the start and near impossible for Asian guys. They are decent looking guys, so I see why it worked for them.

To prove my point, I did a little experiment on Eharmony. I was able to join for free (but can't communicate or see your matches). I created 2 accounts and answered that long questionnaire the same, EXCEPT for only 1 section, my ethnicity. For one account I put I was White, the other Asian.

Now for those who are not familiar how the system works. You fill out this long questionnaire and Eharmony will send you a handful of matches who they deem compatible each day. You cannot search yourself. Your matches are displayed as tiles. The tiles contain the person's picture (cannot see pic as free user), their name, age, and location. The tiles are either blue or green. A blue tile is someone who is a match for you based on your questionnaire and settings. A green tile is someone who 'is just outside your settings' but Eharmony thinks they 'could' be a match. So I created the two accounts and let them sit.

Here are the results. The White account had a ton of matches 200+ (a lot, I didn't really count them all). Pretty much all of the matches had blue titles, were remotely close to my age group and were located near me (I had it default to 60 mile radius search for both accounts). Now the Asian account had very few matches, ~50. 97% of the matches had green tiles, meaning they weren't quite a match, but could possibly be because they were 'just out of my settings'.

I looked at the matches' info for the Asian account and saw that:

  1. They were out of my age range. (10+ years) (Less occurring)

  2. They were way out of my distance range. I got matches in Canada and from a few states away. This is like 500+ miles away from me. (This is the most occurring). Most matches weren't even in my state.

People who I reported these results to couldn't believe it. Sadly, it wasn't too surprising to me as similar stuff with online dating happened in the past. (Well I'd admit, I didn't really put too much time into online dating. I just wanted to see if stuff like this existed online as well. Yep.)

For people who use Eharmony, I wish you better luck!
